Several times a year we run into a holiday when there is no steward or bartender on duty to wait on the members at the bar. Being most of them are family members or make other plans like the rest of us, it is not always possible to schedule one. At that time it is up to each individual to wait on themselves, or if not familiar with procedures, can ask for assistance.

WANTED - DUCK HUNTERS!

One of the Capital District’s best kept duck hunting secrets is only ten miles north of Albany. Found in the Town of Clifton Park is the Vischer Ferry Nature Pre¬serve. Offering 600 acres of prime waterfowl habitat, the Town of Clifton Park opens the area exclusively for duck hunters only during the first seven days of the duck hunting season. Hunters must have a permit for the authorities to control access to the area for hunters only. To obtain a free permit, you need a current hunt¬ing license and duck stamp. Please contact the Town Clerk at the Town of Clifton Park office located at One Town Hall Plaza, Clifton Park, NY 12065, telephone number (518) 371-6651. A little history on the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve is that from 1950 until 1977 the area was known as the Vischer Ferry Wildlife Management Area run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). Your conservation fund money was used for habitat restoration. Additionally, in 1952 a major construction project was undertaken with the construc¬tion of a dam by NYSDEC to control water levels in the ponds for waterfowl. Again, your conservation fund money. Unfortunately, in 1977 NYSDEC relinquished control of the property owned by the New York State Canal Corporation. That same year the Town of Clif¬ton Park obtained the lease of this property for about $100 a year! Yes, NYSDEC gave up the area and sold out hunters for $100. Once the Town of Clifton Park took control of the area, they changed the name of the Vischer Ferry Wildlife Management Area to the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve. Along with the new name, they banned hunting except for the first seven days of the duck hunting season. Sad how money out of hunters pockets now benefits only non-hunters. Be aware that this area has been the subject of pro¬test by anti-hunting groups determined to prohibit hunt¬ing at this and other public areas. Their claim that only twenty hunters signed for permits in 2007 was unac¬ceptable to close the area to nonhunters, even though the non-hunters have unlimited use fifty-one weeks a year. So please, please help fight the anti-hunters by simply obtaining a permit whether you intend to hunt in the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve or not. United we are strong, and there is strength in numbers. Imagine what the anti-hunters would say if not 20 hunters, but 20,000 hunters received a permit! The Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve (formerly the Vischer Ferry Wildlife Management Area) may not be your choice, but it is for some of your brother and sister duck hunters. Help save their place to hunt. Would you not expect the same ac¬tion from them if your hunting spot was threatened?

Becoming a Member of Guan-Ho-Ha Fish and Game Club

To become a member of Guan-Ho-Ha Fish and Game Club, the first step is to be nominated for membership by a member who has been a member for over one year and is in good standing. The next step in the process is to complete a membership application form, (both you and your sponsor), and pay all fees (application fee and first year’s membership dues payment). The final stage of the application process, if your application passes through an investigation, is to be voted into membership by a majority of the Club’s members at a membership meeting. Once approved, you must complete an orientation course at the Club. A copy of the Club’s by-laws will be provided to you that you will be responsible to obey. You must make a meeting to be voted in. After one year you are eligible for a door card.

Check out our new shooting platform!!

When you start practicing for deer season this year, you’ll have a great way to work on your tree stand shot. Mike Petrillose had a great suggestion, and look what happened. Our new shooting platform has 2 levels to shoot from, 8 and 16 ft. There is still a little clean up and grading to do, but the platform is ready to use. You won’t have to guess how to compensate for being up in the air this year. Come on up and give it a try.

American Dog Tick
by T. Edwards Nickens
Is there anything nastier than a blood engorged dog tick? Yes, Indeedy - the thought of that same sucker having gross sex on your scalp. Only the female blows up (shown left) when the gal has had her fill, she mates with a similarly satiated male. One consolation: After sucking your blood and doing the wild thing on your head, the female tick shrivels up and dies. Of course that only happens after she lays several thousand tick eggs in the lining of your hunting jacket. .

Recycle Your Hunting and Firearm Magazines

When you are through reading your hunting and firearm magazines, please recycle those magazines. Before recycling them, remove your name and address label along with any articles you find important. Keep a supply of those recycled magazines in your vehicle and gym bag. When you’re waiting to get your vehicle serviced; waiting for the doctor or dentist; or exercising at the gym leave the recycled hunting and fishing magazine behind. Some will take interest and read them, maybe even take them home. The anti-hunter and anti-gun types afraid of the truth will surely trash the magazine. No problem, you can always return with more recycled magazines! Help spread the truth and facts about hunting and firearms. If anyone confronts you in a negative manner, ask them to read the First Amendment of the Constitution and then tell them to have a great day in the United States of America! .
